In more than 600 cities in China, more than 300 cities are short of water, of which more than 100 are seriously short of water. The research on MBR in China has not been ten years, but the progress is very rapid. The research on MBR in China can be roughly divided into several levels: (1) explore the different ways of combining biological process treatment and membrane separation unit, and expand the biological reaction process treatment from activated sludge to touch air oxidation method, biological fiber mask, dual platform integrated machine processing technology combining activated sludge process and biofilm, and two-phase anaerobic fermentation processing technology; (2) Study on the elements, principles and mathematical analysis models of hazard disposal and membrane environmental pollution, explore suitable use standards and main parameters of processing technology, try to alleviate membrane environmental pollution, and improve the solution function and operation reliability of membrane modules; (3) The application scope of MBR is expanded. The research objective of MBR is expanded from domestic sewage treatment to high concentration organic sewage (food sewage, beer spray sewage) and insoluble chemical wastewater (petrochemical wastewater, wastewater treatment, etc.), but it is dominated by the solution of domestic sewage treatment.

The average water source in North China is only 250-480m3/person/year, less than 1/5 of the national average. Almost all cities in this region suffer from water shortage. Therefore, wastewater reuse is one of the main methods to alleviate the shortage of water resources in the North China Plain. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology is concerned because its excellent water yield is considered as an energy-saving technology with good economic development, social development and ecological benefits. Although there is still a problem of high operating costs, with the development of membrane production technology, the improvement of membrane quality and the reduction of membrane manufacturing costs, MBR investment will also be reduced. Therefore, from a long-term perspective, MBR will eventually be used more widely in sewage treatment. Today, with increasingly stringent water and air quality standards, MBR has shown its great development prospects and will be a strong competitor to replace the traditional sewage treatment technology in the new era.
